Valentine’s Day

Sonnets from the Portuguese, XIV

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

If thou must love me, let it be for nought

Except for love’s sake.  Do not say

“I love her for her smile – her look – her way

Of speaking gently, for a trick of thought,

That falls in well with mine, and certs brought

A sense of pleasant ease on such a day”-

For these things in themselves, Beloved, may

Be changed, or change for thee, – and love, so wrought,

May be unwrought so.  Neither love me for

Thy own dear pity wiping my cheeks dry, –

A creature might forget to weep, who bore

Thy comfort long, and lose thy love thereby!

But love me for love’s sake, that nevermore

Thou mayest love on, through love’s eternity.

I hope everyone has a very happy Valentine’s Day!  Enjoy it with a loved one.

    jan,

Wasn’t she a wise woman…who knew beauty was fleeting, to ask to be loved for love’s sake! Happiest of Valentine’s Day to you. Gorgeous amaryllis.

I love that Sonnet — in fact, I got the title of a novel I wrote from the second line (For Love’s Sake Only…no, you won’t find it on the shelves…yet.) 🙂 Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours.
